Imanol Zabaleta is the Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spanish Basque Country. He has professional experience as researcher (Eawag-Sandec, CH), independent consultant (international) and public officer. Trained as agricultural engineer and with more than a decade of international work experience in the field of municipal solid waste management, he has conducted projects in Bolivia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Philippines, Tanzania, Kenya, Mexico, Seychelles, Morocco, etc. in collaboration with local partners and international organizations such as UN-Habitat, the German development agency (GIZ), the Japanese development agency (JICA), WWF, and several NGO's.

He has lecturing experience in several universities and he is author and co-author of several publications and has participated closely in the development and validation of waste related SDGs and marine litter estimation models

The Centre for Environmental Studies that he currently directs is a municipal agency acting as an environmental Think-Tank. Its mission facilitate and catalyze transitions on different sectors, namely Food Systems, green infrastructure, mobility, circularity of materials and behaviour chante for the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz.
